Motorcycle recovery

Motorcycle accident recovery.

A motorcycle is not a small car, and recovering one as though it were is how bikes pick up damage after the accident rather than during it. Our team's experience covers bikes as well as cars.

  • Enclosed transport

Closed trailer or van, so the bike is not exposed on the way.

  • Secured properly

Wheel chock and correct strapping rather than whatever is to hand.

Motorcycle experience in-house, not an afterthought to the car side.

Detail

Written for someone dealing with this now. If you would rather just talk to us, the number is at the top of every page.

Why bikes get damaged in recovery

A motorcycle has no parking brake, no natural resting position and nothing structural to attach a strap to that will not bend. Loaded badly, it can go over. Strapped badly, it can have its forks compressed for the whole journey, or its bodywork crushed by a ratchet.

Done properly, it goes into a wheel chock, is held upright, and is strapped at points that will take the load — with the suspension not fully compressed for the duration. None of this is complicated. It just has to be done by someone who has done it before.

Enclosed transport, and when it matters

An enclosed trailer keeps the bike out of the weather and away from road debris. For a damaged machine with cracked bodywork or exposed internals, that is the difference between arriving as it left and arriving worse.

For most bikes it is the right answer. A van also works well, particularly in tight urban locations or where an enclosed trailer simply cannot get near.

After a bike accident

Get yourself checked. Motorcycle accidents produce injuries that do not announce themselves at the scene, and adrenaline is very good at hiding them for a couple of hours. A medical record from the time also matters if there is an injury claim later.

Photograph the bike where it landed, the road surface, and anything that contributed — a diesel spill, a pothole, a vehicle position. Once the bike is upright and moved, that evidence is gone.

Then call us. We will arrange recovery, somewhere secure for the bike, and the assessment of what it actually needs.

Assessment and repair

Bike damage assessment is its own discipline. Frame and fork alignment, damage hidden behind fairings, and the difference between cosmetic and structural are not things a car-only bodyshop is well placed to judge.

Our team's background spans motorsport, mechanical repair and diagnostics as well as bodywork, and covers both cars and motorcycles. If a machine needs a marque specialist for part of the work, we will say so.

Questions

Asked on this exact subject.

Will my bike be transported enclosed?
Where enclosed transport is the right option for the machine and the location, yes. A van is sometimes the better choice in tight spaces. We will tell you which we are sending and why.
Can you recover a bike that will not roll?
Yes. Tell us when you call — a bike with a seized wheel, bent forks or crash damage that stops it rolling needs different handling from one that can be pushed.
Can I get a replacement motorcycle?
It may be possible depending on availability and the circumstances of your claim. Tell us it is a bike you need, because for most riders a car is not a replacement.
